Module aim (aims)
- to make participants aware of the characteristics of children as foreign language learners- to develop the skills and strategies of planning a foreign language lesson for children - to develop the ability to use methods and techniques suitable for teaching English to children, including activating techniques and techniques supporting the development of learner autonomy- to develop the ability to plan activities which aim at the development of learners’ language skills- to develop the ability to plan and teach different types of lessons - to develop the ability to evaluate, choose and produce own teaching materials- to familiarize participants with literature connected with teaching English to young learners
Pre-requisites in terms of knowledge, skills and social competences (where relevant)
- Minimum language requirements: B1+ level- Basic knowledge of pedagogy- Ability to work in groups- Ability to use different learning methods
Syllabus
Week 1: Characteristics of children as language learners. Differences between age groups.Week 2: The use of English as the main language of communication in the classroom. Giving instructions Week 3: Classroom management, class organizationWeek 4: Teaching speaking Week 5: Teaching pronunciation – games and activities Week 6: Teaching vocabulary - techniques, materials, activities. Ways of memorizing vocabulary Week 7: Teaching receptive skills: listening and reading – developing variety of techniquesWeek 8: Teaching writing – to teach or not to teach writing to children? Week 9: Developing young learners’ creativityWeek 10: Using games in language teachingWeek 11: Integrating a foreign language with other school subjectsWeek 12: Evaluating, preparing, storing language materialsWeek 13: Teaching children on-lineWeek 14: Planning a foreign language lesson for kids.Week 15: Participants’ presentations
