Module aim (aims)

The participants will learn on the vocal means of emotional expression in human, its evolutionary and developmental background.

Pre-requisites in terms of knowledge, skills and social competences (where relevant)

Basic competence in general linguistics and phonetics is recommended.

Syllabus

Week 1: Introduction: presentation of the syllabus, explaining basic notions

Week 2: Emotions: their origin, development, expression, and function   

Week 3: Emotions, feelings, and attitudes. Theoretical approaches to human emotions. What evokes emotions, what modulates the expression of emotions.

Week 4: Data and metadata acquisition for emotional speech studies

Week 5: Empirical study of emotional speech: an overview of methods, techniques, tools and challenges  

Week 6: Experimental design and perception studies: the framework and examples

Week 7: Duration in speech: definition, units, production and perception.

Week 8: Duration in emotional speech. 

Week 9: Pitch: definition and units of measurement. Perception of pitch. 

Week 10: Pitch in emotional voice

Week 11: Voice quality in speech: how to define it and how capture it     

Week 12: The quality of emotional voice

Week 13: Integrating skills: analysing samples of emotional speech

Week 14: Discussion on the final projects      

Week 15: Discussion on the final projects and summary of the lecture
