Module aim (aims)

To help the students understand the basic principles of cell biology, the importance of the cell structure to its functions and the roles of both the subcellular organelles and the major biological macromolecules.

Pre-requisites in terms of knowledge, skills and social competences (where relevant)

Basic information about macromolecules – their structure and function – in living organisms.

Syllabus

1. Attendance in seminar classes is mandatory.
2. The final grade from lecture is upon the final test.
3. The final grade from seminars is upon student activity and work group during classes.

Week 3:            2h        Membrane structure & function

Week 4:            2h        The nucleus - information central

Week 5:            2h        The endomembrane system

Week 6:            2h        Mitochondria, plastids and peroxisomes

Week 7:            2h        The cytoskeleton & the extracellular matrix

Week 8:            2h        Cell junctions

Week 9:            3h        Cell communication

Week 10:          3h         The cell cycle

Week 11:          3h         Consuming cell biology knowledge- creating a celloid

Week 12:          3h         Repetition of test material

Week 13:          2h         Cell Biology test
