Module aim (aims)

The main aim of the course is presentation of the impact of biotic and abiotic stresses on plants. In frame of the course students will get theoretical and practical knowledge concerning:

The course will include short theoretical lectures, seminars consisting of discussion about recent publications associated with the lecture topic and practical classes.  

Pre-requisites in terms of knowledge, skills and social competences (where relevant)

Knowledge: basic knowledge of botany and plant physiology

Syllabus

Lectures and seminars:

Week 1(introductory lecture): Introduction to plant ecophysiology.           

Week 2 (lecture and seminar): Extreme temperatures – heat and cold stress.       

Week 3 (lecture and seminar): Stresses associated with water status – drought and flooding.           

Week 4 (lecture and seminar): Salt and osmotic stresses.

Week 5 (lecture and seminar): Anthropogenic stress factors - pollution.   

Week 6 (lecture and seminar): Biotic stresses.    

Week 7 (lecture and seminar): Role of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species in plants response to stress factors.           

Week 8 (lecture and seminar): Plant post-stress recovery.

Week 1: Metal stress.

Week 2: Temperature stress.

Week 3: Water stress.

Week 4: Biotic stress - plant-pathogen interactions

Week 5: Biotic stress – allelopathy
