Module aim (aims)

Students shall be introduced research integrity & research excellence; Students develop a research-related ethical competence and responsibility, e.g., providing a research statement (for students incl. doctoral students) and an ethical statement in all types of research area; applying for an ‘approval’ of an Institutional Board (Ethics Committee)

Pre-requisites in terms of knowledge, skills and social competences (where relevant)

Students shall prepare a training research project (approximately 4 pages/takes ca. 25 h=1 ECTS) according to instructions/guidelines check-listed and available at the 1st meeting; deadline for training research project: 2nd or 3rd meeting. Individual ethical statement edition: January 2021 (takes ca. 25 h=1 ECTS); reading materials takes ca. 25 hours=1 ECTS.

Syllabus

Week 1: What is my area and discipline? Pre-disciplinarity, interdisciplinarity, crossdisciplinarity, multidisciplinarity, post-disciplinarity; specialization and departementalisation of knowledge and research. Orientation and guidelines to prepare a ‘training’ research-project. Authorship and contributorship transparently defined
Week 2: The history of science as a history of research malpractices (into the most recent, e.g., culture appropriation), related to research methods.
Week 3. Research integrity and research excellence to make the core normative framework of every research project
Week 4: Researcher, research participant/subject, risk, damage, personal/sensitive data protection, etc. (starting glossary of research ethics)
Week 5: Best practices & basic international regulations and policies (European Union & European Commission)
Week 6: National guidelines (comparatively discussed with Students)
Week 7: Research statement for students
Week 8: Training: discussing students’ training research projects to identify topical ethical issues
Week 9: Making ethical statement
Week 10: Findable, accessible, interoperable: data management plan & promoting Open Research Data: a researcher’s novel ethical responsibilities (European Commission Directive 2019)
Week 11: Responsibilities of a research project manager (and their research team)
Week 12: Applying for approval (step by step) of a related Institutional Board
Week 13: Submission & publication ethics (an overview)
Week 14: Glossary of research ethics
