Module aim (aims)
The main aim of the course is to learn about the several and various ways in which Ovid Play's intertextual game with the ancient tradition before him or even with several motifs used previously by himself.
Pre-requisites in terms of knowledge, skills and social competences (where relevant)
The general orientation in Roman Augustan literature and mythological tradition.
Syllabus
Week 1: Poeta doctus and his position during the Augustan period.Week 2: General view on Ovid's works and |ife.Week 3: Ovid's works on the background of the Greek tradition.Week 4: "Amores" and Greek love poetry.Week 5: "Amores" and Catullus.Week 6: t'Ars amatoria" and ancient didactic poetry.Week 7: "Ars amatoria" vs. Lucretius.Week 8: "Metamorphoses" as a "bible" of mythology.Week 9: "Metamorphoses" and the Greek prototypes.Week 10:"Metamorphoses" as the Latin examples. Aemulatio or imitatio?Week 11: In exile: Ovid vs. Consolatory tradition.Week 12: In exile: "Tristia", "Epistulae ex Ponto" and ancient mythology.Week 13:Poetry in Tomis as a form of epistolary genre,Week 14: Ovid in the intertextual play made by the latter poets.Week 15: EXAM
