Module aim (aims)

Conveying basic knowledge about the Ancient Greek conjugation and declension system.
Developing the skill to formulate simple sentences in Ancient Greek.
Developing the ability to read simple Ancient Greek texts.
Developing the skill to translate from Ancient Greek to English and vice versa.

Pre-requisites in terms of knowledge, skills and social competences (where relevant)

Classes are largely conducted using the conversational method. Particular emphasis is placed on developing the skills of building simple sentences, which are then gradually enriched with additional syntactic elements. The subjects of dialogues and texts combine elements of the ancient world and modern times.

Syllabus

  1. Singular forms (1st, 2nd, 3rd person) of the present tense. Negation; translation exercises.
  2. Questions. Singular forms (1st, 2nd, 3rd person) of the imperfect tense; translation exercises.
  3. Plural forms (1st, 2nd, 3rd person) of the present and imperfect tenses; translation exercises.
  4. Working with the active infinitive; translation exercises.
  5. Nouns ending in -ον. Working with the direct object; translation exercises.
  6. The future tense. Middle voice; translation exercises.
  7. The future infinitive and the verb μέλλω; translation exercises.'
  8. Masculine nouns ending in -ος. Feminine nouns of the first declension; translation exercises.
  9. The use of the genitive. Contracted verbs, part I; translation exercises.
  10. The use of the dative. Contracted verbs, part II; translation exercises.
  11. The participles and basics of the third declension; translation exercises.
  12. Passive voice. More on the third declension; translation exercises.
  13. Athematic aorist; translation exercises.
  14. Thematic aorist; translation exercises.
  15. Review and supplements.
