Timetable
15 h of lectures combined with calculations, practicals/demonstrations (in the lab) and problem-based learning
Module aim (aims)
Transfer of knowledge in the field of physical chemistry, photophysics, photochemistry and emission spectroscopy;
Familiarization with basic terms and equipment (includig laser-based devices) used in fluorescence spectroscopy with broad scope of applications in: chemistry, physics, biology and medicine
Pre-requisites in terms of knowledge, skills and social competences (where relevant)
Syllabus
1. Basic terms related to fluorescence: spectral range, emission spectrum, fluorescence and phosphorescence quantum yield, excited states, lifetimes, kinetics, etc...
2. Light sources (incl. the laser), equipment for fluorescence spectroscopy - basic principles and practical uses
3. Equipment for fluorescence measurements and its components (spectroscopy and microscopy)
4. Time-resolved fluorescence and its challenges
5. Singlet oxygen
6. Practicals - applications of fluorescence methods in industry, lasers, single molecule fluorescence, fluorescence microscopy
