23.10.25, 9:00-15:00, Class 2 and 3: Archaeological excavations and main monuments of the oldest Poznań - field trip (meeting point: in front of the Church of Saint John of Jerusalem outside the walls, 1 Świętojańska street)

30.10.25, 9:00-15:00, Class 4 and 5: The surroundings of the Old City – field trip (meeting point: in front of the Old City Hall)

Module aim (aims)

- to present general overview of the basic themes in Poznań history and archaeology from the prehistory until the 21st century (with special attention to the most important archaeological and architectonical monuments and places of historical meaning)
- to point out the meaning of the historical processes which influenced the urban development of Poznań
- to raise student awareness of the problems related to the preservation of urban cultural space

Pre-requisites in terms of knowledge, skills and social competences (where relevant)

Knowledge of Spanish.

Be able to walk during six hours. The end of October can be very cold, please remember to dress warmly.

Syllabus

- Sources, methods, geography and prehistory of the metropolitan area of Poznań 

- General introduction to the archaeology and history of Poznań 

- Archaeological excavations and main monuments of Ostrów Tumski

- The main monuments of the Old Town 

- The surroundings of the Old City 

- Recapitulation and final discussion

Important:

In addition to passing an exam testing basic knowledge of the history of Poznań, the student must submit (no later than November 13 to the following address: krueger@amu.edu.pl) and present (the 20th of November) a written paper on a selected monument of Poznań. The paper should have the following structure:

  1. First and last name, university of origin, title of the paper

  2. Introduction (aim and scope of the work, historical context)

  3. Presentation and discussion of the monument (history of its creation and its past, technical/architectural details, analogies)

  4. Summary (significance of the monument)

  5. Bibliography

The paper must include bibliographic citations in the text and a corresponding reference list. Use the Harvard referencing style preferably (https://biblioteca.unizar.es/ayuda-y-formacion/citar). The bibliography should consist of no less than five items. Printed works on the history of Poznań can be found, among other places, in the library of Collegium Historicum. Even if you do not know the Polish language, use them, for example, as a source of archival illustrations. Use your own materials, such as photographs or independently developed plans. Label all illustrations and provide their source. Please use at least a few of the works listed below. Write the paper yourself. Do not rely on artificial intelligence, as it can make mistakes. The paper can be short but must follow academic writing rules.
