Module aim (aims)

This course facilitates acquiring knowledge necessary for understanding the direct relation between different spectroscopic methods and the processes taking place as a result of interaction of light and matter. Moreover, the students will become familiar with the applications of the spectroscopic methods, and instrumental aspects of specific techniques, including: electronic absorption and emission spectroscopy of atoms and molecules, circular dichroism spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, NMR spectroscopy, EPR spectroscopy, Mössbauer spectroscopy, spectroscopy on surfaces, and mass spectrometry. All techniques will be illustrated by application and data from pure chemistry experiments, and by some studies illustrated on systems of practical importance, including food and (natural and synthetic) polymers and some others.

Syllabus

Week 1 The types of spectroscopy (electronic absorption and emission spectroscopy of atoms and molecules)

Week 2 The types of spectroscopy (circular dichroism spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, NMR spectroscopy, EPR spectroscopy, Mössbauer spectroscopy, spectroscopy on surfaces, and mass spectrometry)

Week 3 Construction and principle of operations of colorimeter, spectrocolorimeter, spectrophotometer, spectrofluorimeter, NMR equipments etc.

Week 4 Selection of measurement conditions, preparation of the sample to studies

Week 5 Practical recording of electronic absorption and emission spectra of atoms and molecules

Week 6 Analyze and interpret spectroscopic data collected by the different methods discussed in the course (electronic absorption and emission spectroscopy of atoms and molecules)

Week 7 Practical applications of spectroscopy, including determination of falsification of edible oil.

Week 8 Practical applications of spectroscopy, including determining the color of paints and dyes available in stores with paints,

Week 9 Practical applications of determination of the effects of aging beer.

Week 10 Practical applications of spectroscopy to determine of shade of dental materials

Week 11 Ultrafast laser spectroscopy

Week 12 Practical recording of circular dichroism spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, NMR spectroscopy, EPR spectroscopy, Mössbauer spectroscopy, spectroscopy on surfaces, and mass spectrometry

Week 13 Analyze and interpret spectroscopic data collected by the different methods discussed in the course (circular dichroism spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, NMR spectroscopy, EPR spectroscopy, Mössbauer spectroscopy, spectroscopy on surfaces, and mass spectrometry)

Week 14 Applications of UV-Vis absorption-emission spectroscopy to deterime acid-base equilibriums for organic compounds and studies of excited state double proton transfer reaction
