Module aim (aims)
- Providing students with basic knowledge necessary to understand the present role of competition law within the market integration in the European Union
- Providing students with basic knowledge necessary to understand the scope of the application of the selected provisions of the European (national and EU) competition law
- Equipping students with skills to identify competition law problems and methods of solution when confronted with such matters in ordinary course of business
Pre-requisites in terms of knowledge, skills and social competences (where relevant)
Students attending the course are expected to be familiar with basic legal (civil and public law) and economic concepts.
Syllabus
Week 1: Legislative and economic framework for EU and national competition law
Week 2: Goals of EU competition law and interplay with EU internal market policies
Week 3: Basic concepts (undertaking, relevant market etc.)
Week 4: Rules applied to undertakings: anti-competitive agreements (part I)
Week 5: Rules applied to undertakings: anti-competitive agreements (part II)
Week 6: Rules applied to undertakings: abuse of dominant position
Week 7: Rules applied to undertakings: merger control
Week 8: Rules applied to Member States: state aid
Week 9: Enforcement and procedures
Week 10: Member states and EU competition law
Week 11: EU Competition Law and digital markets (introduction)
Week 12: Specific competition challenges in digital markets: case studies
Week 13: The Digital Markets Act: the need for specific regulation. Objectives and key concepts. Social and economic role of digital services and online platforms regulation
Week 14: The Digital Markets Act: specific obligations for gatekeepers
Week 15: Enforcement and effectiveness of the Digital Markets Act
