Module aim (aims)
The main aim of the course is to learn how the eminent poet, Ovid, plays the subtle and often sophisticated game with the reader using motifs from the literary tradition or even from his previous works.
Pre-requisites in terms of knowledge, skills and social competences (where relevant)
Good English and a general orientation in classical mythology and culture.
Syllabus
1. The learned poet in Rome. 2. "Amores" vs. Tibullus and Propertius. 3. "Art of Love" as a didactic poem.
4. "Art of Love" as an opposition work. 5. "Heroides" - the letters between lovers. 6. "Heroides" and the mythology.
7. Women in "Heroides". 8. "Metamorphoses" and Greek mythology. 9."Metamorphoses" and Roman reality. 10. Poet in exile. 11. Violent "Ibis" and its possible examples. 12. Exilic poetry and the epistolary tradition. 13. Exilic poetry and the epistolary tradition. 14. Ovid: imitator or innovator? 15. EXAM.
