Module aim (aims)
· general idea of criminal law in European Union and its Member States
· general insight in Polish criminal law and Polish criminal system
Pre-requisites in terms of knowledge, skills and social competences (where relevant)
· level of English that enables to communicate and read legal texts
Syllabus
Week 1: Criminal offence and criminal reaction from historical point of view.
Week 2: Criminal offence and criminal reaction in light of penal law and other sciences.
Week 3: Various aspects of criminal reaction: aims, functions, directives in criminal law.
Week 4: Retributive justice and just deserts theory
Week 5: Prevention and preventive justice
Week 6: Chosen theories of crime
Week 7: Consequences of conviction for offender and third parties
Week 8: Age and crime
Week 9: Restorative justice - introduction
Week 10: Victims and survivors in criminal law
Week 11: The concept of ideal victim and its consequences
Week 12: State paternalism and criminal justice
Week 13: Criminal law as a part of EU criminal justice system
Week 14: Polish criminal law - general introduction
Week 15: Polish criminal law as part of the EU criminal law
