Module aim (aims)

Interdisciplinary applications of scanning electron microscopy and electron dispersive spectrometer; the basics of scanning electron microscopy, preparation and characteristics of selected samples, the possibilities and limitations of using the scanning microscope and microanalysis.

Pre-requisites in terms of knowledge, skills and social competences (where relevant)

Syllabus

Lecture 1: Basic definitions and their importance for the functioning of the microscope (e.g. emission current, beam current, electron lenses). Lecture 2: SEM and its components; the essence of the working distance, the choice of a vacuum; preparation of samples for analyzes in high and low vacuum conditions. Lecture 3: EDS analysis (mapping, point analysis and analysis along the line). Lecture 4: Examples of the use of scanning microscopy in geological research. Lecture 5: Archaeological objects in SEM-EDS. Lecture 6: SEM-EDS - possibilities and limitations. Lecture 7: Students samples- examples of SEM applications.
