Module aim (aims)

Course Description: The Contemporary Polish Culture and History course will consist of 2 parts taught in a hybrid mode: Film and Game Studies Part (15 hours) and History Part (15 hours). The first part covers the following content: Polish History through the Films of Andrzej Wajda and Krzysztof Kieślowski; Masterpieces of Polish Documentary Cinema – Authors, Titles, Poetics; Polish mise-en-scène? Gamespaces in Contemporary Polish Video Games. The second part covers Polish History in Perspectives topic. This course will concern Polish history in the 19th and 20th centuries. It will be presented in the broad context of international relations and from various theoretical perspectives. The subject matter of the course will therefore concern not only political history but also e.g. history of the 19th and early 20th centuries from the postcolonial perspective, memory studies perspective, environmental history issues, the scope of social history, and cultural studies. The classes will focus on the significant events of that period, such as the 19thcentury partitions period and Poland's involvement in the politics of superpowers, the participation of Poles in World War I and regaining independence, shaping Polish statehood in the interwar period, the history of World War II, the period of communist rule and the era of democratic transformation of 1989 and beyond.

Learning Outcomes: Having completed this course, students will be able to 1) recognize the key figures in the history of Polish documentary film, their most significant works, and their styles of creation within the documentary genre; 2) analyze video games in a socio-cultural perspective, taking into account national contexts; 3) analyze and interpret their key characters, themes and motifs in the context of Polish history; 4) analyze Polish history in the context of postcolonial perspective, memory studies perspective, environmental history issues.
