Module aim (aims)

Presentation and evaluation of development of the idea of private law in continental Europe, basing on output and impact of the given great jurists of specified periods (from the ancient times to contemporaries).

Pre-requisites in terms of knowledge, skills and social competences (where relevant)

a) basic knowledge about social history of Europe;
b) basic knowledge about the concepts of private law and social functions of private law
c) basic knowledge in legal terminology and legal argumentation.

Week 3: Roman jurists of the classic period - continuation (II) / "Codification" of Roman law (Justinian)
Week 4: "Codification" of Roman law (Justinian) - continuation (II)
Week 5: The medieval jurists - the Glossators (Irnerius, Accursius) (I)
Week 6: The medieval jurists - the Commentators (Bartolus de Saxoferrato) (II)
Week 7: French legal humanism (Donellus, Cuiacius)
Week 8: Rationalization of private law (Leibnitz, Thomasius)
Week 9: The French way to Civil Code (Pothier, Portalis)
Week 10: The German way to Civil Code - the historical school (Savigny) (I)
Week 11: The German way to Civil Code - the Pandectists (Windscheid) and the jurisprudence of interests (Ihering) (II)
Week 12: The Suiss way to Civil Code (Huber)
Week 13: Private law in Poland (I) - inter-war period (Longchamps de Berier, Domanski)
Week 14: Private law in Poland (II) - post-war communist period and 80s/90s (Przybyłowski, Radwański)
